Under the Companies Act No.1 of 2012, amended Memorandum and Articles of Association of Ankore Kaaro-karungi Cultural Trust Ltd, Ankole Kingdom is pushing for the official recognition by the government of the Republic of Uganda following 1967 abolition by the state. In this regard, all Kingdoms in Uganda were restored by Statute No. 8, and also by the Amendment Act [No. 8] – Article 118 (1) – of 1993 enacted by the Parliament of Uganda and officially recognized and protected by the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda by Chapter IV. Article 37, Chapter XVI. Article 246 (1) – (6) – of 1995 and by the Amendment [No. 2] Act – schedule V. Article 178 of 2005 and by the Acts Supplement [No. 4] – Act 6 of 2011. However, the official recognition of His Majesty the King (Omugabe w’Ankole); Idiriisa Kawesa Igumira Kitobobo II from the Abahinda Royal Clan remains to be seen in Ankole.

Omugabe Idiriisa Kawesa Igumira Kitobobo II is the grand-grandson of King Ntare V Rugingiza ya Kibooga who ruled Ankole up to 1895. King Ntare V was the son of King Mutambuka and Songora princess Kibooga, a daughter of King Achali Miranga of Ababiito clan. The descendants of King Ntare V are currently residing at Itaaba palace in Rwampara, Bwigara cell, Nyakayojo division in Mbarara City.

It is important to note that prince Nkabitsigarira I produced prince Murengyera who produced prince Byabagambi who produced three children; prince Rwitahoona, Prince Karaka Kahira, and prince Nkabitsigarira II who became the successor to his father and princess Ayera Bonabaana. Among the four, prince Nkabitsigarira II became a successor to the royal family of King Ntare V. Prince Nkabitsigarira II was succeeded by his son Idiriisa Kawesa Igumira Kitobobo who is currently the royal clan leader of Abahinda ruling clan, cultural leader, chief priest and the King of Nkore.

Among the Kingdoms restored by President Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s regime in 1993, the traditional Ankole Kingdom was neglected due to a lack of true legitimate lineage of the Abahinda clan. When the elders of the royal clan sat, they resolved the standoff and agreed to register under one umbrella of Ankore Kaaro-karungi Cultural Trust Ltd to revive the glory of Ankole Kingdom through the lineage of King Ntare V Rugingiza which is now headed by HRM Idiriisa Kawesa Igumira Kitobobo as their clan leader and chief priest in accordance with the cultural norms and traditions of Cwezi rituals.
